Tuesday October 1, 2002 - Prolog: The Good Times and the Bad

We have lived in Phoenix for over forty years, and during that time we have, above all else, looked to the Mexican playa for respite and sanctuary when we needed a break from the increasing pressures of city life. The wild is built into our collective psyche, and we hope to have many more years of solitude on the playa in the coming years, but there are basic periods in life that must be adequately planned. The time has come to investigate our options and set a path toward our eventual retirement while we are still among the working.

As with our experiences in the Mexican wild, this diary describes an adventure and a quest. We want to find out more about living in another place. To do this, we will research my wife's roots and take up residence where she grew up. Our log starts off with some bad times, the catalyst that freed us from the maelstrom in which we have been caught up for so many years . . .
